Phoenix Coyotes broadcaster and longtime NHL defenseman Nick Boynton was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly causing a disturbance and fighting with police officers inside a Buffalo, N.Y., casino, according to The Buffalo News.

The Coyotes placed Boynton on a leave of absence pending the case's legal process.

Boynton, 36, faces charges of assault, criminal mischief and harassment after he was allegedly "abusive" toward staff at the Buffalo Creek Casino late Wednesday. When Buffalo police tried to detain Boynton, he fought officers and bit one of them on the finger, the report said.

The Coyotes issued a statement on Thursday:

“Early this morning, Coyotes radio color analyst Nick Boynton was involved in a situation at a Buffalo casino. A police investigation is underway. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and until the continuing legal process is completed, we will have no further comment. Mr. Boynton has been placed on a leave of absence.”

Boynton joined the Coyotes broadcast staff before this season after an 11-year playing career that spanned six clubs. He played two seasons for the Coyotes.

The Coyotes are in Buffalo for Thursday's game against the Sabres.
