The Angels dominated Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma on their way to a comfortable 8-1 victory on Monday.

Top of the American League (AL) West with an MLB-leading 94-56 record, the Angels are assured of a play-off place.

Iwakuma lasted just over three innings as he was taken for seven runs by the in-form Angels, who have won 11 of their past 12.

Albert Pujols had a three-run double in the third to send the Angels on their way before leaving the game with a hamstring injury.

The Orioles moved within a win of their first AL East title since 1997 with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Ryan Flaherty crushed a two-run homer, while Chen Wei-Yin lasted nearly six innings for his 16th win.

Central remains the tightest AL division and the Detroit Tigers maintained their one-and-a-half game lead over the Kansas City Royals.

Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera smashed ninth-inning homers as the Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 8-6.

The Royals also won a thriller as Lorenzo Cain hit a walk-off single in a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Mariners are two games behind the Royals in the wildcard race, with the Oakland Athletics clinging onto their spot.

The Blue Jays are five games back, while the Cleveland Indians (3-1 loss to the Houston Astros) and the New York Yankees (1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays) are a further game behind.

In the National League (NL), the Washington Nationals are closing in on the East title after a 4-2 win over the Atlanta Braves.

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their lead in the West to four games, thrashing the Colorado Rockies 11-3 as the San Francisco Giants lost 6-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In other matches, the Miami Marlins edged the New York Mets 6-5, Anthony Rizzo belted a walk-off homer in the Chicago Cubs' 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds and Andrew Cashner pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the San Diego Padres past the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0.
