Texans' Andre Johnson says report of pay cut is news to him

Andre Johnson

Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson after practice Friday learned that he had agreed to take a pay cut to remain with Houston next year.

That turned out to be big news to Johnson. "Who said that?" Johnson asked.

When ESPN reporter Tania Ganguli told Johnson that his uncle and advisor, Andre Melton, had reportedly told the Houston Chronicle that Johnson would accept a salary cut for next year, Johnson seemed surprised.

"Really?" Johnson said. "I don’t know where that came from. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it."

The 33-year-old Johnson, who earlier this month said he’d like to play 15 years, or three more seasons, with the Texans, has a base salary of $10.5 million in 2015, with a cap figure of $16.1 million, according to ESPN. So a salary cut might make it easier for the Texans to keep him around.

But Johnson said no such talks have occurred yet.

"I never made any statements about no pay cut or anything because nobody ever approached me about a pay cut," Johnson said. "Like I said, I’ll cross that bridge whenever it comes."

Johnson has 75 catches for 802 yards and two touchdowns this season.
