Aggies DC John Chavis sues Texas A&M, LSU over contract dispute

In what has become a bizarre story, Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis has filed a lawsuit against both his new employer and his former one, LSU, over a contract dispute.

According to KBTX-TV, LSU has requested that Chavis pays the school a $400,000 buyout. But Chavis is claiming that his new employer, Texas A&M, should be responsible for paying some or all of the bill.

Chavis, who left LSU for Texas A&M after the Tigers’ loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 30, didn't officially submit a resignation letter to LSU until four days after he landed in College Station — a move that LSU is saying deserves a $400,000 buyout because Chavis broke his contract before Jan. 31, 2015.

Chavis’ deal did not have a buyout if he left during the last 11 months of the deal, which ended Dec. 31, 2015, the New Orleans Advocate reports.

However, according to the lawsuit, "based on Chavis' notice of termination on January 5, 2015, the 'termination date' according to the Amendment was effective thirty days after the written notice served to LSU or (sic) February 4, 2015, which falls within the 11th month remaining on Chavis' Employment Agreement. According to Chavis, he does not owe LSU $400,000 as a result."

The lawsuit also reads that Chavis wants the 272nd District Court in Brazos County, Texas, to figure out whether LSU is owed the money and, if so, what A&M is required to pay LSU.
