Cardinals pitcher Wainwright ruled out for season

Adam Wainwright - Cropped

Adam Wainwright's MLB season is over, after scans revealed the St Louis Cardinals pitcher tore his left Achilles tendon.

Wainwright, 33, suffered the injury in the Cardinals clash with the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday, when slipping out of the batter's box.

"Adam Wainwright is scheduled for surgery on Thursday. Recovery is 9-12 months, and the club is optimistic of his return," the Cardinals tweeted.

A 12-month stint on the sidelines would rule out Wainwright for the start of the 2016 season.

There is no set replacement for Wainwright in the starting rotation, with Jaime Garcia prone to shoulder injuries and Marco Gonzales not considered consistent enough.
