Hayne has been widely tipped by American journalists covering the 49ers to make the team as a punt returner and fourth-choice running back.

A Tweet by The NRL Lurker’s old sparring partner the The Mole on Tuesday night claimed the former Parramatta star has already received news he has achieved his NFL dream.

But speaking on KNBR radio, an unimpressed Tomsula insisted he is yet to decide Hayne's fate.

"I don't know what the rules in the media are in Australia, OK? But you might want to fact-check," he said.

"The 53 is not set."

NFL teams are required to finalise their 53-man squads by 3am Sunday morning (AEDT).

Hayne has one more pre-season game against the San Diego Chargers on Friday (AEDT) to cement a spot on the 49ers roster.

Should he miss the cut the 27-year-old can be claimed by any of the other 31 NFL clubs.

If all other clubs passed on the chance to sign him the 49ers could then add him to their 10-man practice squad.
