The Blue Jays have signed left-hander Johan Santana to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced Thursday.

The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner, who will be 36 next month, hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2012. He missed all of 2013 following his second major shoulder surgery as a member of the Mets.

He was close to returning with the Orioles last year, but severed an Achilles' tendon during a start in extended spring training. In January, he experienced shoulder discomfort during winter ball in Venezuela.

Santana has a career record of 139-78 with a 3.20 earned-run average over 360 games with the Twins and Mets. A four-time All-Star, Santana threw the first no-hitter in Mets history against the Cardinals on June 1, 2012.
