Whispers: AFL Teams Round 4

Luke Hodge

Richmond v Collingwood

Brett Deledio will spend another week on the sidelines as struggles with his ankle injury, but he should be right for Round 5. Nick Vlastuin was concussed last week, but should get up, while Orren Stephenson will play again if Shaun Hampson can't prove his fitness. Matt McDonough looks likely to come in after he was one of the few good players in the Tigers' 117-point loss in the VFL.

Dayne Beams has been declared a certain starter, but don't be surprised if he is a late withdrawal. Sam Dwyer and Taylor Adams will miss, which opens the door for Josh Thomas and Ben Kennedy to come back into the side. Kyle Martin will also be right in the frame, while Quinten Lynch is ready to go if Nathan Buckley wants more height.

Carlton v Melbourne

Expect Mick Malthouse to wield the axe after last week's shocker. Tom Bell and Simon White are in the gun and there could be further changes with seemingly no one safe. Last year's first-round draft pick Patrick Cripps will come in for his debut, while former Lion Sam Docherty will make his first appearance for the Blues.

Chris Dawes is a certainty to come straight into the seniors to give the Demons a key focal point up forward. Jack Trengove is too good for VFL, but will probably stay there for another week as he looks to find his best form. Jordie McKenzie and Sam Blease are right in contention, while it's time for Jay Kennedy-Harris to get a full game so expect him to dropped to the VFL.

Port Adelaide v Brisbane
Preview

The Power will make at least two changes with Chad Wingard and Angus Monfries both ruled out. Paul Stewart will be one of the inclusions and Aaron Young is firming to be the other after an impressive outing in the SANFL. Sam Colquhoun and Cam O'Shea are the next two waiting in the wings.

A similar story for the Lions with Daniel Rich out injured and Dan Merrett suspended. Ryan Harwood is the logical replacement for Merrett, while Nick Robertson will make his debut. Former Magpie Jackson Paine kicked five in the reserves and should come in for Michael Close, who has made a disappointing start to the year.

GWS Giants v Western Bulldogs
Preview

The Giants are tracking along nicely so don't expect too many changes, although there will definitely be one with Devon Smith suspended. If Lachie Whitfield gets through training then he will come into the side, otherwise Liam Sumner or Kristian Jaksch are ready to step in after solid games in the reserves.

A serious shoulder injury to Jordan Roughead will see him miss an extended chunk of the season with Michael Talia is likely replacement. Hearing some strong whispers that Tom Liberatore could miss with a groin complaint so don't be surprised if his name is missing on the Thursday team sheet or if he is a late withdrawal. Koby Stevens will come straight back into the side, while Marcus Bontempelli is firmly in the frame to make his debut. Veteran Daniel Giansiracusa might be rested.

Gold Coast v Hawthorn
Preview

The Suns will be without the suspended Brandon Matera, which could pave the way for former NRL star Karmichael Hunt to make his first appearance of the season. Tim Sumner is also right in the frame to come in. Stephen May's successful win at the tribunal means Charlie Dixon might be given an extra week to get over his groin injury.

Luke Hodge will be a certain inclusion for the Hawks, while Ben Stratton is set for his first game of the season after recovering from a hamstring. Brad Sewell suffered a setback and won't be considered, while Ben McEvoy will need to pass a fitness test to return to the side. Brian Lake has served his suspension, but will return via the VFL as he battles calf problems. Angus Litherland, Matt Spangher and Will Langford could be the unlucky ones to make way.

Geelong v West Coast
Preview

The Cats will again wait until the last minute with veteran Corey Enright's fitness, while Taylor Hunt is also available after serving a one-match suspension. Jackson Sheringham could be the unlucky one to make way despite a decent performance last week. Mitch Brown was disappointing last week and Josh Walker starred in the VFL so that is looming as another likely change. Whoever Geelong selects on the Thursday, don't be surprised to see a late change given they have made four in three weeks so far.

The Eagles will be making up to six changes to the side that defeated St Kilda last week. Darren Glass joins injured duo Mark LeCras and Chris Masten on the sidelines, while Luke Shuey is suspended. Elliot Yeo and Callum Sinclair are also not making the trip to Melbourne. Sharrod Wellingham, Sam Butler, Dom Sheed, Scott Lycett and Pat McGinnity all come into the side, along with Jeremy McGovern who looks set to make his debut.

Sydney v North Melbourne
Preview

It's hard to see anyone dropping out of the Swans side, although Gary Rohan might have a full game in the twos. Craig Bird will be added to the 25-man squad, likely to be joined by Brandon Jack and Dean Towers, although it remains to be seen whether any of them make the final cut.

One confirmed out for the Roos with Jamie Macmillan missing up to six week with a fractured fibula. Jack Ziebell will miss again, but veterans Michael Firrito and Scott McMahon will be added the extended squad and one should make the final team. Liam Anthony is also in the mix, but might struggle to force his way into the final team.

St Kilda v Adelaide

The Saints have one definite out with Sam Gilbert sidelined through injury. Dylan Roberton appears the logical replacement, while former Giant Josh Bruce could make his first appearance for the Saints. Jack Steven is looking likely to be fit, but might play a half in the VFL before being unleashed into the seniors. Jack Billings will be in the squad after booting five in the reserves, while there are plenty of others pushing their case including Seb Ross, Tom Lee and Terry Milera.

Scott Thompson will be monitored after a corky last week, but will be named along with Sam Kerridge (eye) and Mitch Grigg (adductor). All three face fitness tests on Saturday. Brodie Martin and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen were the standouts in the SANFL and will be added to the squad. The Crows may look to test the Saints defence with the inclusion of Lewis Johnston or Shaun McKernon as well.

Fremantle v Essendon
Preview

Zac Dawson is a welcome addition to the side that will lose Michael Walters and Garrick Ibbotson to injury and are still without Nat Fyfe and Michael Barlow. Chris Mayne is racing the clock to be fit as well. Colin Sylvia is set for his first appearance for the Dockers, while Zac Clarke is also another likely inclusion. Clancee Pearce is a certain inclusion, while Anthony Morabito may be a surprise addition to the squad, but probably won't make the final cut.

Two veterans won't be making the trip with Paul Chapman and Dustin Fletcher to remain in Melbourne. Paddy Ryder should be passed fit to make the trip, while Patrick Ambrose will be in the squad after he was a late out last week. Leroy Jetta and Zach Merrett are the other two likely additions to the 25-man squad.
