Western Bulldogs announce Brendan McCartney departure

Brendan McCartney

The embattled Bulldogs held a press conference at Whitten Oval on Friday at 11.30am, where it was announced that McCartney has become the third coach in two weeks to lose their job.

McCartney's position had been under scrutiny following the Bulldogs' meek finish to the season, although three days ago Gordon dismissed reports the coach went close to being sacked last month.

Griffen's shock trade request to Greater Western Sydney on Thursday has since plunged the club into crisis, with Gordon declaring the Bulldogs would stop Griffen from leaving.

The captain is reportedly one of a group of senior players who complained to the club about McCartney's coaching.

The former Geelong and Essendon assistant, who never player AFL/VFL, has two years remaining on his contract but it is unclear what terms have been reached with him.

McCartney coached the Bulldogs for 66 games, including 20 wins and 46 losses.

He has overseen 24 list changes since he was appointed before the 2012 season.
