Geelong midfielder Travis Varcoe has suffered another setback to his injured foot raising doubts about whether he'll play again this season.

Varcoe is set to have another operation which is expected to sideline him for a further 6-8 weeks.

The 24-year-old, who starred in Geelong's 2011 premiership triumph, suffered the initial stress fracture in January and is yet to play a game this season as a result.

Varcoe had resumed running and was thought to be close to a return date before the setback.

He initially had a pin inserted into his foot, however complications in his recovery meant the pin was removed.

Geelong take on Sydney at the SCG on Friday night.
