Hird was reportedly cycling home from a training session at the club’s Tullamarine base to his home in Toorak, when he lost control of the bike in the wet conditions and fell in South Yarra.

An ambulance was called for the 42-year-old just after 5pm, with Hird treated at the scene and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Hird, who was wearing a helmet at the time, is in doubt to coach against the Kangaroos on Friday night.

The Bombers are however, hopeful that the champion Bomber will be released from hospital on Tuesday morning.

Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid confirmed that Hird remained in the Alfred Hospital on Monday night under observation.

“James was very fortunate he was wearing a helmet which has braced his fall,” Reid said.

“He has suffered severe concussion however, X-rays cleared him of any fractures.

“James will remain in hospital for ongoing observation and following a review, we hope he will be discharged soon.”
