The maddest of AFL Mad Mondays

16:9. Mad Monday Geelong Cats

Flaming Dwarves
St Kilda’s dismal recent history hit a new low on Mad Monday last year when the players hired a dwarf entertainer only for Clint Jones to set him on fire. At least with Jones delisted by the club on Sunday following their final-round loss to Adelaide, the Saints won’t officially have him on the books for Mad Monday this year.

Hiring the dwarf is rumoured to have been a dig at short-statured former Saints coach Scott Watters who struggled badly in his second season to get the message across. But the incident kicked off a dramatic period for the Saints, one that saw them eventually sack Watters and poach Port assistant Alan Richardson at the start of the Power’s pre-season.

And it also dragged in former AFL boss Andrew Demetriou as well, who when told of the incident, started giggling on Channel 7 program Talking Footy. Demetriou was forced to apologise after a public outcry.

Brendan Fevola
The Fev pretty much wrote the rule book on taking Mad Mondays to another level, the former Carlton and Brisbane forward finding himself in one of Melbourne’s busiest intersections – down by Flinders St station – wearing a nightie and a massive strap-on dildo.

Not surprisingly a few people were offended but Fevola didn’t learn his lesson as the same strap-on made a second appearance the following year when Fev swung it around his head during a drinks sessions at Naughtons Hotel.

Geelong Costumes
Geelong have created a tradition of producing some awesome costumes on Mad Monday, which for them is usually much later in the season than now and they call Whacky Wednesday anyway!

Matthew Scarlett appearing as Hannibal Lector was one favourite, while former Sportal columnist Cameron Ling coming as Ronald McDonald was probably a little obvious. Joel Selwood appeared as Garry Lyon at one stage, being stretchered from the ground as he was when he broke his leg back in 1987.

But a few costumes have raised eyebrows, particularly back in 2011 when Mitch Duncan and Jimmy Bartel appeared as Ricky Nixon and St Kilda schoolgirl Kim Duthie. AFL legend Ron Barassi said the costumes were in bad taste following the scandal for Nixon.
