Sydney Swans hand Tom Derickx AFL lifeline

The Swans' recruitment of the 25-year-old as a delisted free agent comes after they snapped up former Carlton and Geelong defender Jeremy Laidler earlier this month.

Derickx only managed two games in three years at Punt Road after being taken as a mature-age recruit in the 2010 draft (pick 63) from Claremont in the WAFL.

But that hasn't deterred Sydney and they most probably see Derickx as a bargain-basement replacement for premiership big man Shane Mumford, who defected to GWS during last month's exchange period.

It's been a busy off-season for the preliminary finalists who, on top of picking up Laidler and Derickx, also pulled off the most sensational recruiting coup of the modern era by signing up two-time premiership Hawk Lance Franklin for an incredible nine years.

They've also lost Andrejs Everitt (Carlton), Jesse White (Collingwood) and Mumford (GWS).

Tony Armstrong (Collingwood) and Alex Brown were delisted while premiership trio Jude Bolton, Marty Mattner and Mitch Morton all retired.
