Geelong again dominates the nominations for this year's All Australian team with seven Cats players among the initial 40 announced by the AFL.

Geelong have by far the greatest representation of the 16 teams, while fellow top four sides Collingwood (five), St Kilda (four) and Western Bulldogs (four) were the other main contributors.

It means that between them those four sides make up half of the preliminary squad. There are 16 players who have never made an All Australian side before, including three of the four nominees for the ruck position, Darren Jolly, Shane Mumford and Mark Jamar.

Jolly's team-mates Harry O'Brien and Scott Pendlebury are a chance to make their first appearance, while two Geelong players, James Kelly and Harry Taylor are also in the running for their first All Australian nod.

Melbourne veteran Brad Green capped a stellar year by gaining a nomination along with team-mates James Frawley and Jamar.

Fremantle's David Mundy, North Melbourne's Brady Rawlings and Andrew Swallow, Richmond pair Jack Riewoldt and Brett Deledio, Sydney's Nick Malceski and Shane Mumford and West Coast's Mark Le Cras are also a chance to make their All Australian bow when the squad is named on September 13.

Three teams, Brisbane, Adelaide and Port Adelaide failed to get a player nominated, while Essendon's 35-year-old full back Dustin Fletcher made the list along with skipper Jobe Watson.

"Selection in the All Australian team is recognition for a tremendous year of football, as the best player in your position across the entire competition," AFL CEO Mr Andrew Demetriou said.

"All Australian selection is a great honour also because of the quality of those players you have competed against, to win your spot, and the selectors nominated the 40-best players of the year to highlight the outstanding players who are in contention for selection as one of the elite players of the season," he said.
