St Kilda have received some good news on the injury front, with the club revealing that defender Sam Gilbert does not require a knee reconstruction.

Gilbert was injured during the Saints 26-point loss to the Magpies on Friday night and initial reports suggested the 26-year-old could be sidelined for the rest of the season.

But Gilbert had successful surgery on his knee on Tuesday and is expected to be available for selection again later in the season.

"After undergoing surgery on Tuesday morning, St Kilda Football Club can confirm Sam Gilbert will not require a knee reconstruction," a club statement read.

"The defender had lateral ligament damage repaired and will miss between 8-12 weeks depending on the progress of his rehabilitation."

The Saints also lost Lenny Hayes to injury in Friday, with the experienced midfielder injuring his calf in the warm-up and having to be replaced.

Hayes is expected to be sidelined for 2-4 weeks with the problem.
