Adelaide's Brent Reilly stable in intensive care

Brent Reilly

Reilly is in a stable condition and "breathing by himself" on Wednesday, the day after emergency surgery, Adelaide's club doctor Andrew Potter says.

Reilly was kneed to the head during a match simulation drill at training on Tuesday.

"I don't really want to go into it further other than that it was a fracture at the side of the skull and it involved more than a crack, it was just several small pieces, and that is why it needed to be established," Dr Potter told reporters on Wednesday.

"His condition at the moment is as expected. He is breathing spontaneously by himself, He is sedated which is normal standard procedure for this situation but he's breathing by himself.

"His condition hasn't deteriorated overnight. It has remained stable and he's communicated with his wife and family this morning and last night."
`
Potter said it was too soon to say whether Reilly would play again.

Forwards coach David Teague said Reilly was hit by a teammate who was leading for the ball during an ordinary drill.

Teague said it wasn't a sickening collision, just unlucky.

"He was going into surgery late this afternoon, I'm guessing he's probably in there at the moment," Teague told Adelaide-based radio station 5AA on Monday afternoon.

"It wasn't a clash of heads, it was just a normal drill; he fell into the oncoming leader.

"It was a big hit but nothing we haven't seen before it was just one of those unlucky ones [where] the force hit the wrong spot at the wrong time.

"We won't know any more until after the surgery."
