Nat Fyfe claims AFL's highest honour

Nat Fyfe

Fyfe charged out of the blocks and led the count nearly from start to finish, claiming the medal on 31 votes.

The Lake Grace local claimed the award despite a late charge from 2014 Brownlow Medallist, Matt Priddis.

Fyfe polled 17 votes in the opening eight rounds of the season, but would have been nervous when the likes of Priddis, Kennedy and Hannebery looked to be gaining momentum in the latter half of the year when Fyfe was looking shaky.

The Docker (31), Priddis (28), Sam Mitchell (26), Josh Kennedy (25) and Dan Hannebery (24) rounded out the top five in what was one of the most thrilling counts in a number of years.

The record books were re-written by Fyfe, who recorded nine three-vote matches, equalling the record of Greg Williams set in 1994.

Fyfe was also the first player in five decades to miss four games throughout the season and still claim the honour.

What is more incredible is that Fyfe was plagued by a lower-leg injury for the final third of the season, before playing through a fractured leg in the Dockers’ Preliminary Final loss to the Hawks on Friday night.
