Month of doom awaits wounded St Kilda

St Kilda loses

MORE: Sizzling Gold Coast Suns thrash St Kilda

Alan Richardson's rebuilding side was ambushed in the first half against Gold Coast on Sunday night before eventually losing by 38 points.

St Kilda next plays Collingwood on Thursday week at Etihad Stadium before a daunting trip to Adelaide Oval to meet Port Adelaide, followed by matches against Geelong and West Coast (away).

Most clubs have a handful of important players on the injury list.

But the problem for the Saints is that almost their entire first-choice back six are out of action.

The absence of Sam Fisher, Sam Gilbert, Nathan Wright, Jarryn Geary and James Gwilt has crippled their defensive structure.

There is further bad news, with fullback Luke Delaney subbed off against the Suns with a hip injury, although St Kilda is hopeful the former Kangaroo will not miss any footy.

Coach Alan Richardson said the club's Round 10 couldn't come quick enough.

"It's a good opportunity for us to rest up - get a little bit of work in, but work that means the guys will be potentially in better shape after the break," Richardson said.

"We have some really strong competition - we play three of the better teams in terms of ladder position straight after the bye and we're going to need to be in really good shape to be competitive.

"We need to make sure that we're right physically, so we'll review the game, they'll rehab tomorrow … then we'll have a reasonable hit-out on Wednesday and then they'll have a couple of days off.

"We'll be back on deck over the weekend to make sure we're ready to go."

The Sainst have used 34 players in 2014, second only to Greater Western Sydney (35).

Although they could regain tough midfielder David Armitage for the Round 11 hitout against Collingwood at Etihad Stadium Thursday week.

The 25-year-old hasn't played since Round 4 when a severe laceration on his knee became infected.
