Monfries: I'm a diver

Essendon's Angus Monfries has admitted diving in the case that saw Hawthorn midfielder Jordan Lewis suspended for two weeks.

Lewis was initially given a one-week suspension for headbutting in Round 14 after Monfries went to ground simulating that he was in pain. The ban became two matches when the decision was unsuccessfully challenged at the tribunal.

The Bomber utility was also the subject of a Match Review Panel investigation after Richmond's Jake King appeared to strike him, but the charge was thrown out, leading to an honest appraisal in which Monfries revealed his staging was something he needed to stop.

"I think Jordan Lewis was really stiff to get the weeks that he did," Monfries told reporters on Friday.

"I took a dive. It was in front of goal. I was trying to get a goal. And there was nothing much in the Jake King incident last week either. It's something I've got to address."

With Essendon set to battle Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night, the club's current assistant coach Simon Goodwin - who retired last year after playing 275 games for the Crows - has been utilised for his intimate knowledge of Neil Craig's side.

Recent speculation has linked Goodwin with the coaching position at Adelaide, with Craig under seemingly endless pressure and Monfries gave his current assistant coach the tick of approval by saying he is ready to coach at AFL level.

"I'm sure he would do a fantastic job as a senior coach," he said.

"The way Goody (Goodwin) goes about his coaching is as professional as the way he went about his footy. Goody has had a lot to do with the midfielders. Playing as a forward, I've sort of been pushing in there a lot more, so I've had a bit more to do with him."

"He has been fantastic and his knowledge for the game and how he reads things and how he prepares....we get a lot of information about opposition, that's a lot to do with Goody."

However Goodwin would not be drawn into that discussion, preferring to play a straight bat to questions about his future in coaching.

"You are talking in real hypotheticals. All I know is where I'm at the moment, I'm really happy. It's a great environment to be in and something I'm really enjoying," Goodwin said.

"I'm really happy here at Essendon. I'm only one year out of the game and I'm really enjoying developing as a coach and working with the players here at Essendon."

Essendon's only finals appearance since 2004 saw them thumped by 96 points by Adelaide in 2009 and Monfries said despite how much he wanted to forget that performance it remained in the back of his mind.

"To make the finals and to get beaten by 90-100 points, you don't look kindly on that," Monfries said.

"You try to forget it as much as you can but I guess it's still in the back of your mind, that feeling and not wanting to feel like that again."

When asked if the Bombers were better prepared this time around, Monfries responded: "I think so. I think we have constantly been improving since then and tomorrow night we are going to go out there and have a crack and try and get away with a win."

Goodwin also revealed that midfielder Jobe Watson and defender Cale Hooker were both available for selection for Friday's match but added that playing Watson this week might be a risk the selection committee were not willing to take.
