Money may kill loyalty

Kangaroos veteran Drew Petrie has slammed the 'ridiculous' offers to entice players to Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney and fears it may be the beginning of the end for the one-club player.

Petrie, an AFL Players Association board member, also said he feels sorry for second-year Demon Tom Scully who's been targeted by GWS with an offer reported to be worth $5million over five years.

"It's a ridiculous amount of money that players are being offered but ... I can understand why they're doing it and I wouldn't begrudge anyone for going up," Petrie said at the launch of this weekend's Multicultural Round of AFL matches.

"Maybe we're going to see more movement of players in the coming years and less emphasis put on the one-club player loyalty."

"The way things are going, we could see players moving around as much as they do in rugby league and even overseas in the English Premier League."

"I reckon there might be more player movement in the coming years."

"Everyone wants to start and finish at the one club, but now you're seeing two new sides and if the AFL want to expand again with more sides and if they try and relocate sides and people want to come back to their home states I reckon there'll be more movement in the coming years."

Petrie said he would be disappointed if any of his teammates quit the club to join GWS and expressed sympathy for the situation that Scully finds himself in.

"He gets cornered a fair bit and I think it's a bit hard on the young fella," Petrie said.

"He's got a massive decision to make on his future and I do feel sorry for him, it's kind of unfair that in his second year of footy he's not allowed to just to play footy."

Asked whether the big-money offers made it all worthwhile, Petrie said: "You feel some sort of loyalty to the club that gave you the opportunity in the beginning and to those teammates who helped you through the first couple of years."
