Geelong will be without skipper Cameron Ling for Friday night's clash with Carlton but should be boosted by the return of Harry Taylor and Joel Corey.

There could be further changes as well with coach Mark Thompson confirming three players have been struck down with the flu, the worst of whom is ruckman Brad Ottens, who was unable to train on Wednesday.

If Ottens was to miss this weekend then Thompson said Mark Blake, who didn't play in the VFL last weekend, would come back into the side.

Ling, who missed last Saturday night's 101-point win over Western Bulldogs, has been battling a hamstring injury and will be given another week to gain full fitness with the finals just a fortnight away.

"It was a very close call to play this week so he'll miss one more then he'll be back for the last game," Thompson said on Wednesday afternoon.

Thompson also leapt to the defence of Ling after Robert Walls said earlier in the week that he believes the first-year captain should no longer be an automatic selection when fit.

"He's had a pretty good year Lingy, it's been hard for him and there's time he gets exposed because if the team plays poorly then it's easier for his opponent to get into the game," he added.

"I think he's had a great year, I think he's been an exceptional leader and he'll definitely be in our 22 (when he's available)."

Key defender Taylor is a certain inclusion having overcome the shoulder injury he picked up in the loss to Collignwood two weeks ago, while Tom Lonergan, who was a late withdrawal last week, will undergo a fitness test later in the week.

Corey has played just nine games this year and pulled out of the side last week after suffering a calf strain but he trained strongly on Wednesday and will more than likely take his place in the side.

Meanwhile hard man Max Rooke, who played his only game of the year in Round 5 against Carlton, is a strong chance to play in the VFL this week as he embarks on a last-ditch effort to get fit for the finals.

Rooke has battled a knee problem all season, but Thompson would welcome him straight back into the side if he regains full fitness and won't rule him out until he has to.

"I think if he doesn't play this week, becaue that's the end of the VFL season, he might find it a bit tough," Thompson added.

"But you never know, if he trains the house down and he's obviously not going to play because the VFL's stopped playing and there's a few injuries then he's always a chance because of the type of person he is."

"(But) it's still wait and see, we haven't seen him this morning so we don't know how he pulled up from training last night (until we do)."
