Hawthorn premiership skipper Sam Mitchell has inked a new one-year deal to remain with the club.

There had been speculation earlier this season that Greater Western Sydney had made a play for Mitchell, but his new contract puts those murmurings to rest.

Mitchell became the third Hawk to re-sign with the club this week, after Isaac Smith and Grant Birchall also penned new deals.

Mitchell has been in good form so far in 2012, averaging almost 26 touches per game, and he told the Hawthorn website he was happy to sign for another year with the premiership contenders.

"It is nice to get an extra year on the contract, and to get a bit more security," Mitchell said.

The on-baller, who turns 30 in October, insisted his body is feeling good despite being in the latter stages of his career, and he said he was determined to get the most out of his career without overstaying his welcome.

"I will continue to play as long as I can play a role for the side, and be a worthwhile," he said.

"I don't want to be on my last legs.

"I feel exactly the same physically as I did five years ago, so I don't see the end any time soon."
