Matthew Kreuzer to miss most of the season

Matthew Kreuzer

The 24-year-old former No.1 draft will undergo surgery on a chronic foot injury and will not be allowed to return for up to 14 weeks.

It's the same problem he had surgery to correct at the end of last season.

Kreuzer pulled up sore after Carlton’s Round 1 clash with Port Adelaide, and was a late withdrawal against Richmond.

The Blues say they are optimistic Kreuzer will play again in 2014.

But that might depend on whether Carlton is in the hunt for a finals berth.

Once the ruckman regains fitness and then form following his period on the sidelines, it could be as late as August, and the Blues may delay Kreuzer's return until next season.

Already missing superstar Chris Judd because of an Achilles injury, the winless Blues face a tough match against Essendon on Sunday.

If they lose again Carlton will be 0-3 and staring at a wasted season.

"We have been monitoring Matthew's foot this week and although he has managed to participate in training, he is still experiencing significant pain," Blues football manager Andrew McKay said.

"His surgeon and our club doctor have determined it is in both Kreuzer's and the club's interests for him to have another procedure, to ensure he is fully fit to play a role in the later part of the season.

"Kreuzer is an integral part of our team and will be missed on the field, but we’re confident this is the best course of action going forward."
