Lewis loves role

Hawthorn hardnut Jordan Lewis is revelling in his new role up forward after putting in another eye-catching performance in the Hawks' 75-point demolition of Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.

Last week against Geelong, Lewis kept All Australian defender Corey Enright very quiet while also bobbing up with two first-quarter goals.

On Saturday he was given the job on Brisbane's 'quarterback' Travis Johnstone and once again he did a terrific job in restricting the damaging Lion to just 16 possessions.

He also managed three goals in the first quarter on his way to an equal career-best haul of four goals and the 24-year-old admitted he is enjoying his new defensive role up forward.

"Yeah it is (defensive role), you probably don't want to do it every week but it's great, it's doing the team thing," he told Foxsports after the match.

"I managed to get a couple of goals early I thought I was probably going to dry up a little bit like last week but managed to get a couple late and I enjoy playing forward and doing that defensive role."

Hawthorn set up the victory with a blistering seven-goal opening term and Lewis was pleased with the way the Hawks worked the ball into their forward 50 and picked the right options.

"I think when we come down here we want to make it a home ground advantage and I think in the first quarter we really took our chances with the wind," he said.

"We didn't just bomb it away, we still hit that little lead up and used the ball pretty well and managed to convert."

Brad Sewell was another massive contributor with 39 possessions, but he was originally not expected to play after he was dropped on Thursday only to be recalled once Lance Franklin pulled out on Friday.

Ironically, Lewis was in the exact same situation when he was dropped for the Round 7 match against West Coast before earning a reprieve when Franklin didn't make the trip to Perth due to an ankle injury.

"I spoke to Sewelly before the game and said 'how are you going to take it?' and he said 'I'm just going to put it behind me and really attack the game'," he said.

"And to his credit he came out and obviously played really well and probably thanks to Buddy he pulled out for me and he pulled out for Sewelly so we'll take him out for dinner."

Hawthorn has now won eight of its past nine matches to solidify its position in the top eight and still remains an outside chance for a top four berth.
