It's the Gold Coast Suns

The AFL's newest team will be known as the Gold Coast Suns after the club unveiled its new guernsey, nickname and theme song at the official launch on Thursday night.

Chief executive Travis Auld said deciding on the new nickname wasn't as hard as he first thought it would be, but Stingrays and Sharks were also considered although branding rights made them an unlikely option.

"When the name Suns came up it was just so damn obvious," he told www.afl.com.au

"It's a fantastic name for our new football club."

"It represent all our values - relentless, dependable, community, bold and fresh - and it has a sense of the great elements of the Gold Coast."

"The sun is why people come here."

The Suns' jumper is very similar to the one the team is wearing in the VFL this season, although it has some slight differences. It is predominantly red with yellow panels on the side and the club's logo in the middle.

Their away strip is also red with a yellow wave across the side, while their clash strip is mainly white with a blue wave and will be worn in away matches against Adelaide, Brisbane, Essendon and Melbourne.

It remains to be seen who the new franchise has signed from the current crop of AFL players, but coach Guy McKenna wouldn't be drawn into the Gary Ablett debate, saying that the club is just after players committed to playing for Gold Coast.

"Gary who?" he joked.

"We've got to make sure we fill up some holes, leadership, forwards, backs and midfielders. We want players that will lead us to a premiership."

"We don't want anyone coming up for a pension."

Unlike many of their AFL rivals, the Suns' theme song is not a rehash of another song, instead it has its own melody and lyrics, which the current players contributed to.
