Irish Invention! Eddie McGuire and Shane Warne to revive International Rules?

The past two series have been one-sided victories for the Irish, but AFL football operations manager Mark Evans hopes the new initiatives will help turn the concept into a success.

For the first time it will be just one match, with the sole Test to be played in Perth on November 22.

The AFL are banking on a strong team representing Australia with only players who have been selected in an All Australian team eligible for selection.

But in perhaps the biggest sign the AFL are keen on boosting the profile of the hybrid game, they have anointed Collingwood president McGuire as Chef de Mission.

And spin king Warne has already thrown his support behind the concept and will be happy to help if asked.

"This is not a hit-and-giggle game of football or an end-of-season trip," declared McGuire

"Putting the coat of arms over our hearts again to take on the Irish ... we'll turn this into something special. We will make sure only the very best players will be picked in the first place and that they will be desperate to play.

"We have to put the prestige back into it, we're not handing out an Australian guernsey to anyone.

Alastair Clarkson will coach the Australian side, while the AFL have already been in consultation with star players Travis Boak, Patrick Dangerfield, Darren Glass, Luke Hodge, Steve Johnson, Nic Naitanui, Scott Pendlebury, Nick Riewoldt, Joel Selwood and Jobe Watson about how to attract the best AFL players.

"By limiting selection to All Australian players, by scheduling the Test later in the year at the end of most players' leave, and by amending the rules, we believe we will field a strong and competitive Australian side that will re-establish the event's standing in the eyes of fans," Evans said told the AFL website.

The AFL and Gaelic Athletic Association will also discuss potential rule changes that will enable ruckmen and key position players to have greater impact on the contest.

No future matches have been scheduled with the AFL and GAA to decide on a potential match in Ireland in 2015 after this year's Test.
