Hawks captain Hodge caught drink driving

Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph broke the news late on Friday afternoon, revealing that it is understood Hodge consumed a number of beers at a social function before being pulled over by police while driving home.

Hodge was fined $450 and will lose 10 demerit points after he blew 0.068, however he will not be punished by the Hawks.

“Luke understands that as a father of two young boys and a leader of our footy club he is in a position to set an example for the community in regards to road safety, and is extremely remorseful,” Hawthorn football manager Chris Fagan said.

“He had a couple of drinks throughout the night and thought he was OK to drive, but makes no excuse for his poor judgment.

“This is a reminder for our entire playing group and the community that when in doubt, to take public transport or catch a taxi.

“We are disappointed in Luke’s error of judgment, the club has spoken to him and the police about the matter and we believe the penalty he has received is appropriate,” Fagan said.

Hodge reportedly believed that he would be under the legal drinking limit, as he had stopped drinking a number of hours before driving.

Hodge is currently serving out a two-match suspension for a high-shot on Port Adelaide’s Chad Wingard two weeks ago, and will not be available to play for the Hawks until the first finals match, most likely against the West Coast Eagles.
