Gibson keeps the faith

Hawthorn recruit Josh Gibson's confidence in the club's fitness staff has helped him return from a severe hamstring injury without fear of reinjuring himself.

Gibson, who returned to the side last week after 11 weeks on the sidelines, admitted it was tough at first to overcome the thought of tearing his hamstring again.

"It is tough (to come back from). When you go back and see the pictures from surgery and think about the mentality of trying to sprint again you always have the thought of the pain when you tore it in the back of your mind, Gibson told Melbourne radio station SEN on Monday.

When quizzed on the mental battle of sprinting at full speed, Gibson said: "I've done enough rehab now and I'm so confident with the program set by the fitness staff that I have nothing to worry about."

Gibson's injury was remarkably similar to that of St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt and the two will play on each other this Friday night if the former Kangaroo has his way.

"I'd like to play on the best and he is a champion," he said.

Hawthorn has won eight of its past nine matches to rocket into finals calculations after a slow start to the season.

Key forward Lance Franklin told Channel 7's Gameday that 'if we get our best 22 out on the field, anything is possible'.

Gibson holds a similar view.

"There is a real belief here if we just keep playing to our game plans and structures that we can shake up the finals," Gibson said.

The Hawks take on the Saints this Friday night in a blockbuster at Etihad Stadium.
