Indeed it was a former Bulldogs’ double act that did most of the damage for GWS as Griffen combined well with Callan Ward at the centre bounces, helping Len Cameron’s side to a solid victory.

However, while Griffen and Ward were good, many of the 1787 crowd at Blacktown will probably be talking about a quality cameo from Cam McCarthy, who came on in the final term and promptly booted three goals.

The Giants probably had the better of the first term, but only led by seven points at quarter-time before starting to put some distance between the two teams by half-time.

A pair of Suns super goals cut the margin back to a point 11 minutes into the third term, but the Giants raced away from there, kicking five of the next six goals to open the NAB Challenge campaign in style.

Will Hoskin-Elliott continued to show great promise with two goals while Lachie Whitfield (28 possessions) and Stephen Coniglio (23 and eight tackles) also impressed.

For Gold Coast Harley Bennell posted three goals while David Swallow played something of a lone hand in the centre with 24 possessions.
