Brad Sewell among fringe Hawks jostling for AFL grand final spots

Brad Sewell

Following Hawthorn's pulsating three-point preliminary final win over Port Adelaide,  coach Alastair Clarkson declared he would be "staggered" if Lewis missed the decider against Sydney.

Lewis suffered his injury, severe thigh bruising just above his right knee, early in the third quarter when he collided with teammate Matt Spangher in a marking contest.

"From what I can gather, he's copped a pretty severe corky in that marking contest early in the third quarter and then soldiered on manfully for the next 20 minutes or so until three-quarter time," Clarkson said.

"It's always around about that time that you're considering making your sub anyway and he was just starting to labour a bit towards the end of the third quarter, so we thought it best to get (Jonathan) Simpkin on.

"As for his recovery, I'd be staggered if a warrior like him doesn't get himself up, but stranger things have happened.

"But we'll have to monitor that bleed over the next couple of days and see how it progresses."

Sewell and ruckman Ben McEvoy are among the senior-listed players who will line up for Box Hill against Footscray in the VFL grand final on Sunday hoping to force their way back into the senior line-up, while Cyril Rioli will also be tested.

A key reason Sewell was dropped for the preliminary final was the 30-year-old's vulnerability against Port Adelaide's youthful midfield run.

But the same 'horses for courses' theory could see the 200-gamer strongly considered against a Swans team that will require brute strength, rather than leg speed, to overcome it in the grand final's all-important midfield battle.

McEvoy's strong VFL will force the Hawthorn match committee to consider recalling the former Saint at the expense of incumbent ruckman Jonathan Ceglar.

While Ceglar is more athletic and covers the ground far better, McEvoy would bring a valuable marking option, whether in defence or attack.

All eyes will be on Rioli when Box Hill meets Footscray at Etihad Stadium.

The livewire, whose been sidelined for three months, will test his threadbare hamstring once and for all.

Should he come through unscathed and perform strongly, the Hawks will want him in their grand final team.

Regular substitute Jonathan Simpkin and like-for-like Paul Puopolo might be candidates to make way.
