Former greats to inspire Lions

Brisbane coach Michael Voss wants his players to honour the club's greats when they play the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Following the match, the club will hold their inaugural Hall of Fame function at a sold-out Crown Palladium in Melbourne, with some of the best players ever to wear the Fitzroy, Brisbane Bears, or Lions jumper to be honoured.

Former Fitzroy stars Kevin Murray and Garry Wilson attended the Lions' training session on Friday and Voss wants the playing group - who will wear a Fitzroy-inspired heritage jumper in the match - to be able to hold their heads high after they take on the Bulldogs.

"It sure is (an important weekend)," Voss told reporters in Melbourne on Friday.

"Garry Wilson just came in and spoke to us about what his time was like at Fitzroy.

"It's really important for us, as a footy club tomorrow, that we go about our business in a manner that when we ... reflect on some of these great players and their contribution they have made to this club ... we play the brand of footy that they are proud of.

"That's the thing that is in front of our group tomorrow."

After a stunning two-point win against West Coast in Round 10, Brisbane were 65-point losers against Hawthorn last week.

That defeat was despite a superb opening quarter in which they took a seven-point lead at the first break.

And Voss says the Lions have spent plenty of time this week on putting in a more consistent effort across all four quarters after the Hawks kicked 11 goals to four in the second half.

"Our expectation is that we want to be able to perform for four quarters," he said.

"The week before we did it. When you sit back and look at the game ... and you see the level of intensity that our players had and their approach to the footy ... that was a seriously willing contest (against Hawthorn).

"(But) we have got to be able to meet that intensity over four quarters and that's something we couldn't do. It is certainly something that has been a definite focus for us coming into this game."

The ruck contest provides an intriguing subplot to the clash at Etihad Stadium.

The Bulldogs will be without regular ruckman Will Minson, who was suspended for one week after inappropriate comments directed toward Port Adelaide's Danyle Pearce.

Minson would have been going up against former team-mate Ben Hudson, who was delisted by the Bulldogs in 2011 and picked up by the Lions.

With Minson out of the picture, the Bulldogs must rely on the inexperienced trio of Jordan Roughead, Ayce Cordy and Tom Campbell, leaving Hudson with a chance to dictate terms on his old patch.

"He (Hudson) has got a few mates out there," Voss said.

"He doesn't mind a bit of banter here and there so he might just have a bit more fun with it, that's all.

"Huddo is a real professional, he is very experienced and he does a lot of homework during the week on his ruckmen and how to play them.

"He is wily, experienced and I'm sure he'll be able to manoeuvre his way around Etihad.

Together with their potential advantage in the ruck, Voss said Brisbane will also be boosted by the 'handy' return of stalwart duo Ashley McGrath and Simon Black.

Finally, Voss restated the Lions' 'potential' interest in luring key forward and Gold Coast native Kurt Tippett away from the Adelaide Crows and back to Queensland.

The Lions attempted to secure Tippett's services after losing Mitch Clark to Melbourne last year, but it remains to be seen if 25-year-old has any interest in leaving South Australia.
