Five crackers from the AFL bargain bin

JED LAMB (GWS Giants)
The only player picked in the 20-second-long pre-season draft. GWS will be thrilled to add ex-Sydney youngster Lamb, a first-round national draft selection in 2010. Fast, with an eye for goal and able to move through the midfield, Lamb has regularly shone at NEAFL level and adds some youthful maturity to the Giants' list. Expect him to play round one against his old club.

JAMES BATTERSBY (Adelaide)
Defender or inside midfielder who played 10 games of senior footy in the SANFL last season. Strong, and while there's not much of him height-wise (177cm), he punches above his weight with his marking ability in defence. Uses the ball well by hand or foot too. Surprising he wasn't taken low down in the national draft. Rookie-listed by the Crows, he should play senior footy.

MATT THOMAS (Richmond)
A really good rookie draft pick-up for the Tigers. Former regular in midfield for Port Adelaide, but only played four AFL matches last season. The 26-year-old spent most of his season in the SANFL and was brilliant, winning the Magarey Medal for the competition's best and fairest. A good depth player, and perhaps could even crack the Tigers' 22 as a Shane Tuck replacement.

MAVERICK WELLER (St Kilda)
Midfielder who was taken as one of Gold Coast's initial intake of 17-year-olds, and was a member of the club's first leadership group. But injuries conspired against the combative inside mid and he was unable to claim a regular spot at the Suns. Now 21, the Tasmanian is likely to be in the Saints' best 22. If he can get his body right, could play most games in 2014.

JAMES HARMES (Melbourne)
Hard-at-it 183cm midfielder who was solid for Dandenong Stingrays in the Victorian under-18 competition, and improved all season. With Melbourne needing to boost their midfield stocks and using both drafts and free agency to do so, he will do battle with plenty of others for 2014 game time. But a decent pre-season gives him a chance of breaking through at the rebuilding Dees.
