Hird’s exit from the Tullamarine-based club marks the removal of the final piece of a bad-management regime that saw the club plunge into crisis, following the supplements saga that has plagued the Bombers since 2011.

Hird’s press conference on Tuesday was emotional, as the Essendon champion bid farewell to an organisation that has meant so much to him over two-or-so decades.

This emotion definitely hit home for fans of the sport across the country, who felt it necessary to pay their respects to the outgoing Essendon legend.

Twitter (sort-of) went into meltdown, with #PutYourPeptidesOut used in reference to the supplements saga, as people posted photos of protein and other supplements placed out the front of their homes on Twitter alongside the hashtag.

Hird stood as the final piece of the puzzle that still remained throughout a period of mismanagement at the club, with many calling for him to be sacked a number of years ago for his part in the controversy.

Hird was famously banned from coaching in 2014 by the AFL for his role in the supplements saga, with his resignation bringing an end to his ultimately disappointing tenure at the helm of the Bombers.
