Facebook: Ten years of Sports People Behaving Badly

Sporting News Logo

But what about those sports stars that may not want to revisit their Facebook accounts? Here's some of the better dodgy Facebook posts that have got athletes into trouble over the years.

Bernard Tomic

We probably don't need to write too much about why our man Bernie had these pics plastered all over the internet and television after they were discovered on a Gold Coast nightclub Facebook page.

Michael Russell and Lleyton Hewitt

Sticking with tennis and last year Michael Russell opted to vent his spleen on Facebook at another favourite Aussie son, Lleyton Hewitt. The incident all started when rain interrupted the Hall of Fame Tennis tournament, forcing Hewitt to play a semi-final against John Isner – which he won – just before playing the final against Nicholas Mahut – which he lost.

Following the match, Hewitt suggested he had the tougher semi-final as Mahut was playing Russell instead of Isner. Russell, though, took it to heart and attacked Lleyton.

"Lleyton Hewitt - what a douche bag and a racist by the way too," Russell posted on his Facebook page, referring to an incident at the 2001 US Open when the Australian questioned the integrity of a linesman following his match with American James Blake

"From ATP website: 'It's disappointing,' said Hewitt. 'If I could've had a day off and come back and played the final, I reckon things would've been different. All in all it was a good week. Can't do much about it. I had the tougher side of the draw, with the semi-finals this morning, I paid the price for that.'

"Really, so serving at 7-5, 5-4 for the Championship all of a sudden you got tired. How about you just choked and stopped making excuses.

"I would have loved to see Mahut/Hewitt on the side court 1 at Newport and see how many excuses Lleyton would have made thenos and around the football world."

Cop that Lleyton.

Nick D'Arcy and Kenrick Monk

The two swimmers were already on thin ice after indiscretions leading up to the 2012 Olympics in London. D'Arcy, of course, was responsible for assaulting another swimmer and therefore missing the 2008 Games in Beijing. Monk, on the other hand cleverly lied to police about a hit-and-run car accident when really, he had injured himself on his skateboard after being told not to go out riding by his coach.

Nevertheless, the pair decided it was a good move to post photos on Facebook, posing with pump-action shot guns and automatic weapons. Of course, this isn't a crime in any way, but it did upset numerous people and especially the victims of gun violence. The pair were fortunate, though, and allowed to compete in London, but were pretty much turfed from the Australian Olympic village as soon as their events were done.

Lisa De Vanna

De Vanna most recently was a contender for the Puskas Award for best goal in world football at the FIFA Ballon D'Or ceremony after being nominated for an incredible bicycle kick in early January last year.

But before that, the Australian international striker made waves by posting a series of photos on her Facebook account posing with an inflatable penis. Unfortunately the photos were all public and the proverbial hit the fan when a 13-year-old fan of De Vanna's found them and told her Mum.

Anthony Mundine

The man who calls himself The Man took time out from fighting hacks for cash to watch television show Redfern Now one night and wasn't happy with what he saw. The program, which revolves around telling tales about indigenous people in the Sydney suburb of Redfern, featured a story on a gay character. And, that was enough for Mundine to take to Facebook:

''Watching redfern now & they promoting homosexuality! (Like it's ok in our culture) that ain't in our culture & our ancestors would have there head for it! Like my dad told me GOD made ADAM & EVE not Adam & Steve," he said.

Lou Zivanovic

The former Penrith player had a decent tiff with his estranged fourth wife on Facebook just a few days ago.

When Michelle Zivanovic's dog suffered from a tick bite and had to be taken to the vet hospital late at night that was the cue for her to vent.

"Seething," she wrote on Facebook. "She has a tick regardless of wearing a tick collar and being sprayed fortnightly with frontline because my disgusting estranged husband has refused to mow our lawn for over two months now.

"I apologise to those that are uncomfortable with the public airing of my dirty laundry but tonight I fear loosing [sic] my dog, tomorrow it could be my children. What sort of man puts his own children's lives at risk to try to force his wife into a paltry property settlement.

To which Lou Zivanovic replied in a post that has since been taken down:

"Every action has a reaction. Imagine having a 35-year dream and spending 5 years of blood sweat and millions to build the family dream home, to find out his wife had been f***ing one of the builders."

Stay classy Sydney

North Melbourne and the Brocial Network

Back in 2011, three North Melbourne players were found to be members of a Facebook group that published revealing photos of women without their consent.

Jack Ziebell, Hamish McIntosh and Robbie Tarrant were all found to be members of the group but denied adding themselves, saying they had become members without their knowledge. This assertion was given some credence, though, by the fact a flaw in Facebook security at that time enabled people to add others to groups without their permission needing to be given.

The trio were never punished by North, which was adamant they'd done nothing wrong.
