What happened

The Eagles led from start to finish in what was a dour clash in front of just 13,610 fans at the Gabba on Saturday night.

The Lions refused to give in, and drew within five points, but a Mark Hutchings goal inside the final two minutes killed off any hope of a late challenge.

Luke Shuey, Mark LeCras, Jeremy McGovern and Ashley Smith all kicked two goals for the Eagles, while Ashley McGrath and Josh Green managed two majors apiece for the Lions.

Eric Mackenzie had a moment he'd rather forget when the Eagles backman kicked into his own goalpost when aiming a defensive cross-field pass to a teammate.

It was a moment that summed up the standard of the match.

The win moves West Coast into 11th place.

They're still a mathematical chance for an unlikely finals berth. But realistically the Eagles are a long way of deserving a spot in the eight.

Hope he's in my fantasy team

Eagles onballer Chris Masten (21 touches) had a busy night while team-mate Luke Shuey (30 possessions) was the game's leading ball-winner.

What's next

Following a week off on account of the split round , the Lions will take on Gold Coast in a night game at the Gabba on Saturday July 26.

The Eagles also have next weekend off, before hosting Richmond at Patersons Stadium on Friday July 24.
