Daniel Merrett cops two weeks for crude elbow

Daniel Merrett

Merrett collected Swallow with a deliberate elbow to the face during the last quarter of the Lions' loss, but as there was no serious damage, he will only be outed for two weeks.

The incident was assessed as intentional, medium impact and high contact, which drew 325 demerit points and was increased to 371.56 once his carryover points were added.

But an early plea, which the Lions will surely take, means he will only miss this week's trip to Port Adelaide and next Thursday night's clash against Richmond.

The MRP were left with no other alternative in grading the incident which begs the question whether a serious action like elbowing someone high should be a separate category.

West Coast could be without gun midfielder Luke Shuey for their top-four clash against Geelong. Shuey was can accept a week for his strike on St Kilda's Tom Curren, but if the Eagles challenge and lose then he will miss two weeks.

Collingwood will also be down a midfielder with Taylor Adams copping a week for his head-high bump on Cat Joel Selwood. Carryover points meant the former Giant couldn't escape with a reprimand, despite the initial charge drawing 125 points.

The Suns were hit with a double blow with forwards Brandon Matera and Steven May both getting a week for different incidents.

GWS could be without Devon Smith for this week's clash against the Bulldogs with the talented forward offered a match for his strike on Melbourne's Bernie Vince.

Richmond received good news with Jack Riewoldt and Matt Thomas both free to take on the Pies after they were offered reprimands.

Sydney will also be breathing a sigh of relief with captain Jarrad McVeigh having his matchday report for making high contact with Matthew Jaensch thrown out.
