Crackers' Call - Not quite All Saints' Day

Having coached there in 1997, I know the culture of the club.

Rumours have been flying around for ages. One suggested that list manager Chris Pelchen and Watters would be in the same room, at the same table, but communicate by laptop.

It's been an open rumour over the last six weeks that Mark 'Choco' Williams is going to coach them. Of course, he's a friend of Pelchen, who seems to be the man of power at the Saints.

Pelchen appears to be an interesting character. A couple of years ago he approached Gary Ayres from Port Melbourne Football Club and suggested he take over the St Kilda Academy.

Ayres never heard from him for six or seven weeks and got on with his life.

The celebrated Dermott Brereton, former Hawthorn champion and a past director at the Hawks, absolutely tore into Pelchen on radio the other day. Then again, Brereton surfs with Watters and is a close friend so was always going to back up his mate.

The people who select football club coaches have got to be looked at. Who selected Scott Watters?

We all know that Garry Lyon selected Dean Bailey and Mark Neeld at Melbourne. He didn't get a chance to select Paul Roos - the AFL virtually pushed him in the door.

People who select coaches must take on a bit of responsibility. There have been some dud selections in the last couple of years and it has affected a few clubs. It will be interesting to see who gets the St Kilda job.

I believe it will be Williams.

Will he help? You certainly hope so.

Williams was a very good footballer I played against, and also coached at Collingwood. He won a premiership at Port Adelaide in 2004 and seems to be having a positive effect on the charges at Richmond.

It will be interesting to see if St Kilda can resurrect their fortunes after Watters.

Regardless, it was a sad ending for a bloke who possibly deserved a little bit better.
