West Coast star Dean Cox has decided to play on in 2014, signing a one-year contract extension with the Eagles on Friday.

The 270-game veteran and six-time All-Australian joins captain and fellow veteran Darren Glass in re-signing with the club.

Cox is almost certain to become the club's games record holder with the 32-year-old likely to overtake Glen Jakovich (276 games) in 2014.

The 2006 premiership player said he was always planning to play next season if he was able to contribute.

"I'm obviously excited about the remainder of this year and the next 12 months. I went through it with the footy club and both parties were happy," Cox said.

"I don't think there was ever any doubt that I wanted to keep going, but when you get to my age, it's a matter of, 'can I still perform at the level I want to?' and then 'can my body allow me do that?'.

"If I can tick both of those boxes and I still have a huge desire and passion to play good football for this footy club, then the decision at this time of the year was very easy."

With Nic Naitanui injured, Cox has shouldered much of the ruck load this season and said that had given him the confidence he could go around another year.

Cox, who saw team-mates Adam Selwood and Mark Nicoski retire on Thursday, said he still had the motivation to compete.

"Watching them and the careers they have had, I have been fortunate to play a lot of footy with both of them," he said.

"I suppose once you can't do what you can or want to do then it is time to finish. I take that out of it as well. Certainly when I finish I will be a happy man and an exhausted man.

"It's not as if it's something I can look at next January and say I want to play the following year because I have got through a pre-season.

"It's a matter of waiting and going through the whole season and seeing how the body is going.

"On top of that, it's about having the drive to still compete at the top level."
