Greater Western Sydney defender Chad Cornes has vowed to play on beyond this season.

Speaking ahead of his 250-game milestone, the former Port Adelaide premiership star declared his career far from finished and believes he can continue to make a mark in 2013.

"I definitely want to keep playing next year, so we'll just see what happens in that department," Cornes said in a joint press conference with coach Kevin Sheedy.

"The body is feeling pretty good at this stage, so if the club want me to play on - and we've had a brief discussion about it - I would love to."

Cornes' illustrious career, which includes a flag in 2004, appeared over when he announced his retirement at the end of 2011 with Port, before he back-flipped to join new boys GWS.

Sheedy, who is set to bring up another significant milestone against Hawthorn on Sunday - a record 900 games as player and coach - said it was his love of the game that had kept him going.

"If you love the game and you live it and breathe it and it's the soul of your life, you just keep putting back in because the game has given me an enormous amount," Sheedy said.

"You couldn't think of a better opportunity at the end of my career at Essendon to come up here and start a club and assist building the game in NSW."

Both spent the majority of their games at other clubs but were unified in their support of the unique opportunity presented to them at GWS.

Sheedy said the Giants needed all the experience they could get and lauded Cornes' work this season, which has included mentoring younger players and acting as a forward coach.

"He's (Cornes) an experienced player and we need all the experienced players we can get," Sheedy said.

"His performances this year have been really good, he gets votes in most of the games he plays.

"So I'd say there's about an 80 percent chance he'll play unless he breaks his leg or something."
