Western Bulldogs star Adam Cooney is close to signing a new contract with the club despite offers from rival teams.

The 2008 Brownlow Medallist has been in talks with the Bulldogs, with coach Brendan McCartney saying on August 1 there was plenty of work to do to keep the 27-year-old.

McCartney wants Cooney to stay and it appears he will get his wish with the one-time All-Australian close to re-signing.

"We're in negotiations at the moment with the club, so fingers crossed it will get sorted out soon," Cooney told the AFL website.

"They're getting there. I'd like to think we'll get it sorted out if not before the end of the season certainly not too long after that.

"I'd love to be a Bulldog for life. They're the club that gave me my start. As I said, I've been here 10 years now. I only live five minutes down the road, so it's a place that I certainly love."

If Cooney decides to move elsewhere, he is unlikely to head to home state South Australia.

He said he had no plans to move back to Adelaide 'any time soon'.

"I'm pretty firmly entrenched in the Melbourne lifestyle," Cooney said.

"My kids just go to school down the road. I don't think we'll be heading back to Adelaide any time soon."
