Conca escapes with two-match ban for Giant king hit

Reece Conca

Conca’s hit on Smith from last Saturday’s game at the MCG, has been one of the talking points of the round so far, his action causing an outcry on Twitter as he was labelled gutless and a sniper on numerous occasions.

The Match Review Panel agreed with the general public and hit Conca with a level four offence as they upheld his matchday report.

The MRP said: “Conca's action was classified as intentional, medium impact and high contact, which drew 325 points and a three-match suspension, which could be reduced to two with an early plea.”

Conca would then have 43.75 points attached to his record.

Another big suspension possibly coming from the weekend came in Geelong’s win over North Melbourne, one that saw Johnson cited by the MRP for pressing his knee into opponent Scott Thompson, not allowing the Kangaroos defender to get up.

Johnson was charged with misconduct and has been offered a one-match suspension that cannot be reduced further with an early plea as the midfielder has existing points on his record due to a haead clash with tagger Ryan Crowley the last time the two side’s met.

Crowley was also involved again during the Dockers’ dramatic win over the Blues last Thursday night.

Carlton’s Nick Graham received a reprimand for making rough conduct to Crowley while contact between Blues skipper Marc Murphy and Crowley was also assessed, the MRP saying that insufficient force had been used to constitute a report.
