Geelong youngster Jesse Stringer has been banned from playing AFL for the rest of the season for his role in an off-field incident.
Stringer faces criminal charges for an off-field indiscretion earlier this month and the club has moved quickly to hand down a suspension.
The 21-year-old will not be considered for selection in the AFL until 2013 and has also been suspended for the next four VFL matches.
"The club has arrived at this decision following a recommendation from the player leadership group that was made in consultation with the general manager of football, the football operations manager, the senior coach and the player development manager," a statement on the Geelong website said.
"The recommendation was endorsed by the club's senior management and the board.
"The AFL has been kept informed and has approved the club's position."
Stringer will also be required to attend behaviour-related education programs arranged by the club.
AFL operations manager Adrian Anderson endorsed Geelong's decision.
"Geelong deserves to be commended for its unequivocal stand, which is reflected in the strong action taken," Anderson said.
"It is also pleasing that the club will provide ongoing support and education to Jesse Stringer during this time to further progress his personal development both on and off the field."
After being taken at pick No.61 in the 2010 Rookie Draft, Stringer finally made his debut in Round 4 this season and showed some promising signs as a dashing midfielder.
The 21-year-old averaged 12.5 touches in eight matches this year and kicked three goals.
