Cats' selection riches

Geelong captain Cameron Ling is among four players set to return for the unbeaten Cats' away clash with Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Coach Chris Scott forecast the return of Ling, veteran cam Mooney, defender Tom Lonergan and youngster Daniel Menzel for what will be the Suns' first home match at Metricon Stadium.

Ling, who missed the two-point win over Carlton last Friday night, has made strong progress from his the shoulder injury he suffered a week earlier in the win over Collingwood.

"We expect to (regain Ling). We can't make any guarantees on the Tuesday but he was close last week," Scott said.

"We've got our main session tomorrow (Wednesday), we expect him to get through that without any problems."

Scott flagged Mooney's return to the AFL ranks even though the triple-premiership forward isn't at peak capacity due to a knee complaint.

"He's got an ongoing knee problem that is going to plague him long after his career and we've got to manage his season," Scott added.

"Unfortunately we can't book his games too far in advance, but he's looking really good for this week."

Lonergan and Menzel have overcome their injury issues and will return, Lonergan from a calf strain and Menzel from shin problems.

As for who will make way, ruckman Brad Ottens looms as the obvious choice to be rested.

Scott wouldn't go as far to say Ottens would definitely miss but said young big man Nathan Vardy had done enough to hold his place after debuting against the Blues.

The back drop of the Suns clash surrounds former Geelong star Gary Ablett, who is set to play his first game against his old club.

Scott acknowledged the Ablett factor and said his former team-mates are looking forward to the chance to face him.

"The boys are really excited. Everyone in the Geelong family knows Gary Ablett has been a champion of the Geelong Football Club, we have a lot of respect for that and we expect our people to respect him as well," he said.

"Once we cross the white line though he's an opposition player we've got to attack, not only is he an opposition player, he's one of the best players going around."

"So we've got to be professional in the way we approach it and be ruthless in that approach."

"Opposition players the quality of Gary, we may not tag him necessarily but we'll certainly pay him a lot of respect. We can't let him do what he likes."
