Cats' July best

Geelong coach Mark Thompson said his Cats played the best game they have in the past month after they crushed Brisbane by 10 goals on Saturday afternoon.

In the four weeks leading up to the clash, Geelong had recorded two wins over North Melbourne and Hawthorn, but two losses to St Kilda and Adelaide.

Thompson said the players needed to respond to the blip in form and he was particularly delighted with the contested ball, which the Cats won 129-116.

"We haven't had our best month of footy, so to hit a couple of KPIs that we've been really wanting to hit was a pleasing result," he said after the match.

"I know our opposition wasn't the best in the world, but it shouldn't really matter who you play, it's more about us and we played the way we wanted to play."

"I think we were more consistent with our attack on the ball and we won the contested ball - which would be the No.1 KPI at every club I think."

"We slipped down over the last month in the contested ball and our scoring had dried up so we won contested ball and we scored more and we played more attacking football, which we haven't been doing the past month."

With a top-four spot all but sewn up, Thompson admitted that he might choose to 'rest' a few players who are carrying minor niggles over the remainder of the home and away season,

"We'll just do what we've done in most years and the guys who are close that have some form of injury, we'll just always err on the side of caution so that we don't play those types," he said.

"A couple that played today I thought we probably should have done that to but we didn't, but we did it with Shannon Byrnes today and we might do it with a few more."

One player who has benefited from a forced lay-off was Steve Johnson, who made a welcome return to the side with four goals and Thompson said the three-week break could end up being the best thing that happens to the 2007 Norm Smith Medallist.

"He looked like he had a lot of energy and his legs were with him and it looked like he just missed footy. Great that he played, kicked five (he really kicked four), looked dangerous," Thompson said of Johnson.

"The important thing is that he recovers well and does it again next week and he finishes off the season really well. In retrospect the three weeks might be the best thing that's happened to him."

But the man Thompson left the most praise for was Joel Selwood, who was simply sensational with 41 disposals, nine marks and 10 tackles in a best-on-ground performance.

The 2007 Rising Star winner has taken his game to a new level in recent weeks, averaging 34 possessions in the past five weeks and his coach has been delighted with his output.

"I thought Selwood's efforts were just incredible," he said.

"To be honest he started the season slow, but he's just had constant improvement and while everyone was sort of slipping back a little bit and we hadn't been playing our best footy in the past month, Joel's really been outstanding."

Thompson said key big man Tom Hawkins, who is set to play in the VFL on Sunday, is a 'very good chance' to play next week against Sydney.
