Carlton thrashing won't sway list changes, says Mick Malthouse

The Blues coach was at his prickly best on Friday night but directed his public anger towards the media, rather than his players.

There has been much debate about Carlton's list, with many suggesting significant changes are needed at the end of the season.

But Malthouse said Carlton would review the season as a whole, and Friday night's hiding would not be viewed as the final straw for certain fringe players.

"I would not use today as an example. It would be unfair to say that's us; that's the most miserable we have played, probably since the Essendon game," Malthouse said.

"We have played a lot of players (this season) and we will look at the playing list on Monday week.

"We won't be swayed by today."

Malthouse said the fact Carlton had played against finals contenders for the past month had worn the players out.

“We don’t make excuses but our blokes have been up for so long, we’re on our knees with injuries,’’ Malthouse said.

“I learnt during the week that they were desperately tired, trying to keep their head above water against sides that are all in, or fighting for, a position in the eight.

“There’s no excuse for 100 points, let me start by saying that. But having been there before, it’s so desperately tough to get up every week, fighting against a side that is either in tyhe eight or fighting for a position in the eight.’’

Malthouse continued his barely-workable relationship with the media, particularly Channel 7's Mark Stevens, whose press conference questions were not respected.

Against Port, Carlton recorded its lowest score of 5.7 (37), worse than the 5.10 (40) it kicked in 2004. The 103-point margin was Carlton's biggest loss to Port - surpassing an 89-point loss in 1998. It was also Carlton's biggest loss for the season.

Carlton will likely finish 14th on the ladder should it lose to Essendon next Saturday afternoon at the MCG in the final round of the season.
