Hawthorn star forward Lance Franklin could play against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday despite a hamstring concern, while captain Luke Hodge is also in the mix.

Franklin did not finish the Hawks' 50-point win over Carlton on Friday night due to a sore hamstring but scans later revealed there was no tear or bleeding in the muscle.

Hawthorn's General Manager of Football Operations Mark Evans has revealed that the news has continued to improve for Franklin.

"The latest news is that Buddy ran today and ran okay," Evans told the Hawks' website on Wednesday.

"We're really pleased it's a low grade injury and we'll see where he gets to by the end of the week.

"Things are going well at this stage."

Hodge faces a test on his knee this week after three impressive weeks on the training track and there is a strong possibility the 28-year-old will play against the Giants without going through a hit-out with Hawthorn's VFL side Box Hill.

Hawthorn's captain has not played since Round 6.

"He's travelling really well," Evans said.

"He's trained really strongly over the last three weeks and he's just about ready to go.

"It's going to be hard to hold 'Hodgey' back.

"He'll either play this week or next week, and we'll make that decision at the end of this week."

Evans also revealed that ruckman Max Bailey, who has an injured wrist, could be back in action for Box Hill in the coming fortnight.

"He is close to returning," Evans said.

"He's had the approval from the specialist to get into full training. He's been doing that now for a week or two."
