Bombers look to build

Essendon coach James Hird wants his Bombers to build on the momentum generated by their Round 1 win when they face Sydney at ANZ Stadium on Sunday.

While impressed with the Bombers 55-point demolition of the Western Bulldogs last Sunday, Hird wants the winning habit to continue against the Swans in the Harbour City.

"There's no doubt if you keep winning the footy club's a happier place to be," Hird said.

"Look we're trying to build ourselves from 14th last year and work our way up the ladder. The only way you do that is by winning games of football back-to-back."

"We've got a tough game in Sydney and need to be at our best to compete with a Swans team that's very tough to beat."

Hird explained Alwyn Davey, who has recovered from a broken arm, and Mark Williams were pressing hard for selection, but admitted the quality of Essendon's first-up showing meant selection would be tough.

"It would be very hard to force your way into the side after last week, we didn't have too many players that didn't play well," he said.

"I've said all along that Mark's very close to selection, Alwyn will play this week - whether it's in the seniors or reserves we'll see. He's ready to play, he'll be wearing an arm guard, that's been approved by the AFL, so there's no issue there."

Similarly to Essendon, Sydney has a new coach in John Longmire, who like Hird remains unbeaten in the role after the Swans draw with Melbourne.

As for his thoughts on whether a fresh man at the helm would mean a different approach by the Swans, Hird wasn't so certain, especially as Longmire was a long-term assistant to former incumbent Paul Roos.

"I'm not sure if it's terribly different, but what we know about the Swans is that they're a great contested football team," he said.

"They defend really well and added a bit of pace on the outside. They transfer the ball well and move it quite well out of their half-back line. We know their contested style of game can really stop you scoring if you don't win that contested footy."

"Going to Sydney there is no greater test than the Swans, they are very well coached and a very structured team."
