Grant Birchall has become the second Hawthorn player to sign a new deal this week, extending his stay until the end of the 2015 season.

At the start of the week Hawthorn revealed they would announce several re-signings in seven days under an enthusiastic marketing campaign labelled 'Seven in Seven'.

And after Isaac Smith's decision to recommit to the Hawks for a further two years on Tuesday, Birchall has followed suit, signing on for another three seasons.

"Yeah, it's fantastic. Obviously I've signed on for another three years, which is great," Birchall told the club's official website.

"I think the club's heading in the right direction.

"I'm really happy to sign on for another three years."

Birchall, who has played 139 games for the 2008 premiers since being selected at pick No.15 in the 2005 National Draft, said he would love to add another premiership medal to his collection as well as joining the leadership group.

"Obviously to try and win another premiership with the guys, that'd be fantastic and that'd be the ultimate goal," the 24-year-old defender said.

"And just try to get better individually, I think I've still got a fair bit to improve on.

"And also the leadership side of things.

"I'd like to get into the leadership group and start ramping up that side of things.

"So I've still got plenty to look forward to."

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson could not hide his delight with Birchall's decision to remain at Waverley Park.

"He had emerged as a very, very important player at our football club," Clarkson said on Wednesday.

"And indeed a very noticeable player in the AFL competition.

"I'm so pleased that this guy has committed to our footy club and set a benchmark for the way the defenders rebound out of defence."
