Big Ben to miss again

The Saints appear likely to retain their makeshift ruck set-up and overlook the club's only fit specialist, Ben McEvoy, for Saturday's clash with Fremantle at Patersons Stadium.

St Kilda coach Ross Lyon said he was pleased with his side's work at the stoppages in last week's win over Melbourne and he sees no reason to change.

This is despite the fact that Freo will be without their trump card Aaron Sandilands who's set to miss a month of football with a toe injury.

"We have (Jason) Blake, (Justin) Koschitzke, a little bit of Sam Fisher around the ground," said Lyon ahead of the club's closed training session at Seaford on Thursday.

"It's probably going to stay like that."

"(Sandilands) is a dominant force … but he's out and we just plan, is it going to be Johnson and Bradley or will they bring in Zac Clarke or Griffin?"

"They've got a few options so we've just got to plan for those contingencies as best we can."

Asked whether McEvoy would play in the VFL, Lyon said: "I can't pre-empt the teams, but we were not unhappy with what was delivered last week."

Lyon dismissed the Saints' good recent record at Patersons Stadium as 'irrelevant' before adding that run and mobility had been important factors and will weigh heavily again at selection.

"It's such a big ground you need good targets to work through - (Nick) Riewoldt, Koschitzke, (Arryn) Siposs and plenty of run," he said.

"You always try and pick a balanced team but it's really about its length, it's 172 metres, so that's pretty long."

"The fundamentals don't change, the basics - win the ball, compete and tackle and work hard for your team-mates."

Lyon agreed there'd been a good feeling around the club coming off the win over Melbourne, just the Saints' second for the season.

"It always fuels the fires a little bit," he said.

"Last week we worked hard and we were enthusiastic."

"It was far from perfect but it was step in the right direction."
