"Adam Goodes has got to stop looking like a sook" - Akermanis

The outspoken triple premiership player spoke on Fox Sports News early on Thursday morning, suggesting that Goodes was playing the victim rather than getting on with his job of being a footballer.

“If he lets whoever is booing - which is not that big of a deal to me - win, then he has to honestly look at himself in the mirror and say 'well they won and I for whatever reason don’t want to play footy anymore',” Akermanis said.

“That would be an absolute shame.

“(Fans) do have the right to boo whoever they want, for all kinds of reasons.

“Any stupid journalist who said that they’re all racist are kidding themselves. I got booed, no one ever said it was racist… umpires get booed every week.

“Adam Goodes has got to stop looking like a sook and stop making it about him in this sense, and also he should stop trying to play the victim.

“In the end the only way to win is to get out there and play and I guarantee you - just ignore it because the booing will go away.

“People are supportive of him and he needs to be the one who just gets out there and plays footy because he needs to remember that's what he’s here to do.”

It is widely agreed that the always-controversial Akermanis is a larakin, and was often booed for his on-field theatrics and antics, and shamed for his off-field politics.

Akermanis was famously embroiled in a saga which saw the champion former-Lion openly suggest that homosexual AFL players should stay in the closet for the good of the game.

In 2010, Akermanis wrote an article for the Herald Sun in Melbourne, which read: “If a player wants to out himself, then I say good luck.

"But I believe the world of AFL footy is not ready for it. To come out is unnecessary for a lot of reasons."

“I believe it would cause discomfort in that environment should someone declare himself gay.”

Akermanis’ views on the booing saga have been shared with only a few in the public domain, with shock-jock Alan Jones and financial editor Ross Greenwood suggesting they saw nothing wrong with the booing of the two-time Brownlow Medallist, Goodes.

However, the AFL in association with the Sydney Swans and the AFL Players' Association have concluded that any booing from now on will be considered racist in nature, given the fact Goodes himself has publicly announced that he thinks booing is racially motivated and is affecting him and his family.

Goodes has been granted extended leave by the Swans and will not be involved in this weekend’s match against the Crows at the SCG.
